His interpretations of Daniel and Revelation reveal a mix of what would be identified today as historicist, futurist, and idealist methods of s: [This post is the fourth in a series on the biblical theology of Irenaeus of Lyons found in Against Heresies].. Working against an atomistic reading of Scripture, Irenaeus appeals to the variegated testimony of the Old Testament that finds unity in Christ (cf. Eph. ). Drawing on these OT witnesses, Irenaeus vindicates the virgin conception of Jesus in a variety of ways.

Irenaeus was born around in the town of Smyrna in Asia Minor. As a young man, he became a disciple of Polycarp who, in turn, had been a student of John the Evangelist. Later in life, Irenaeus journeyed to Rome and eventually to Lyons where he became bishop after the martyrdom of the previous leader. The recapitulation theory of the atonement is a doctrine in Christian theology related to the meaning and effect of the death of Jesus Christ.. While it is sometimes absent from summaries of atonement theories, more comprehensive overviews of the history of the atonement doctrine typically include a section about the “recapitulation” view of the atonement, which was first clearly.

Next follows an exposition of the life and works of St. Irenaeus demon strating his conception of the meaning of Recapitulation in the life of Christ. Then I shall discuss Irenaeus' analogy between Christ and Adam in the light of the Scripture. Eric Osborn's book presents a major study of Irenaeus (–), bishop of Lyons, who attacked Gnostic theosophy with positive ideas as well as negative critiques. Irenaeus's combination of argument and imagery, logic and aesthetic, was directed to the bible.

(Not that any of this should come as a surprise to those who are familiar with the New Testament!). This book provides a full, contextual study of St Irenaeus of Lyons, the first great theologian of the Christian tradition.

John Behr sets Irenaeus both within his own context of the second century, a fundamental period for the formation of Christian identity, elaborating the distinction between orthodoxy and heresy and expounding a comprehensive theological vision, and also within our own Reviews: 6.

An aspect of this atonement theology in Irenaeus is anakephalaiosis, or recapitulation, made popular amongst evangelicals by Robert E. Webber’s book Ancient-Future Faith. This is the idea that Christ, in reconciling the world to God, is the second Adam, and he lives a full human life, his divine life cutting through human life, of eternity.

Saint Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons wrote his Against Heresies ca. The first Christians operated with a hierarchical model of sexual difference common to the ancient Mediterranean, with women considered to be lesser versions of men.

Yet sexual difference was not completely stable as a conceptual category across the spectrum of formative Christian thinking. Rather, early Christians found ways to exercise theological creativity and to think differently from one.

It is evident also from these quotes that Irenaeus places a strong emphasis on Christ’s death as a crucial part of his recapitulation, although I think in the end he leaves the precise role of Christ’s death ambiguous. There is a recurrent contrast throughout the book between not only Adam and Christ, but Eve and Mary, which is interesting.
